I never expected a stranger to overnight me a marriage proposal, but that’s exactly what happened before Max and Taylor’s unforgettable seashell proposal on Captiva Island.
Max and Taylor traveled from North Carolina for a vacation on Sanibel and Captiva. The islands hold a special place in Taylor’s heart, she’s been visiting them since she was a little girl. Knowing how meaningful the area was to her, Max knew there was no better place to ask her to marry him. In fact, he held onto the ring for about a year before they got a chance for their next trip to Southwest Florida.
He also knew something else about Taylor: if she spotted a large shell on the beach, she would absolutely stop to inspect it.
So he came up with the sweetest plan. Instead of a traditional beach proposal, Max dreamed up a personalized seashell proposal that perfectly reflected Taylor’s love for shelling and their shared memories on the islands.

A few days before their trip, Max and his mom overnighted me the shell he planned to use for his one-of-a-kind seashell proposal. They used a shell that belonged to Max’s grandma, thoughtfully applied a vinyl message inside, and carefully packed it for the journey. On the evening of the proposal, Max and Taylor were enjoying dinner at Doc Ford’s while I was planting the shell on the beach on Captiva Island. I even had to defend it from a couple of curious passersby, because let’s be honest, no one can resist a giant shell on Captiva.
I placed the shell along a stretch of beach Max chose, a spot where they had a tradition of taking sunset walks together. So sure enough, as the two of them walked along the shore, Taylor spotted the shell.
Like any shell lover, she flipped it over to see if it was alive, or if it was a keeper. As she flipped it over and read the messaged inside, Max knelt down behind her. She turned around to see him with the ring, just like he planned. And of course, she said yes!
I captured the entire surprise as it unfolded, then we wandered the beach taking engagement portraits while they soaked in the fact that they were newly engaged.
