How to Prepare for Family Photos | Amanda Feltz Photography

Family smiles for photo

Many parents have found themselves wondering how to prepare for family photos. The good news is preparing for family photos can be a fun and stress-free experience with the right approach. Here are some tips to ensure your session goes smoothly and results in beautiful memories.

Choose a location

Your photographer can help you choose a flattering location but it is great if the location reflects your family’s personality. For example, if you love going to the beach together, get your family photos taken there! Some other options may be a park, a city area, or even in your home. You can even incorporate activities you enjoy doing together. Go for a picnic, play on the playground, build a sandcastle, or even feed the ducks at the park!

Prepare the kids

The kids need to be prepared for the photography session but there is a certain way you need to prepare them! In the days leading up to it make sure you talk about it like it’s a fun activity, not a chore to get done. Get them excited for it! Explain that they will be meeting a new friend (your photographer) and having fun! You can also plan another fun activity afterwards, like going to get ice cream as a rewarding treat.

Prepare your outfits

Photographers could talk all day about outfits, so if you need help don’t be afraid to ask. Generally, you should use light neutrals and a couple other colors that coordinate. The whole family does not have to be matchy-matchy, it’s better to coordinate with different shades and tones. Avoid highly saturated colors as those can reflect onto your skin. You can also consider what would look best at the location you’re going to and what would match your home decor. As a family photographer, I also provide a session guide with lots of outfit tips and other thing to help you prepare for your family photos!

Enjoy the session

If you think the session is not going well or you get stressed trying to get your kids to cooperate, that will actually make it worse! It’s best to roll with the session, allow the photographer to entertain the kids, and keep smiling. If you can genuinely laugh and play with your kids that will make for the best photos!
